Kwan Withdraws from Campbell's Classic and Smart Ones Skate America Due to Injury

(10/6/05) - Five-time World and nine-time U.S. champion Michelle Kwan withdrew today from the 2005 Campbell's International Figure Skating Classic in St. Paul, Minn., Oct. 8; and from 2005 Smart Ones Skate America Oct. 20-23, in Atlantic City, N.J., due to a strained ligament in her right hip. Her injury will require two weeks off from training followed by gradual resumption of skating and rehabilitation that could take up to one month. She hopes the injury will be healed in time to compete at the 2005 Cup of China in Beijing, China, Nov. 2-6, 2005.
“Of course I'm very disappointed, but I see this as a temporary setback,” Kwan said. “I intend to follow the doctor's orders, get well and be back competing as soon as possible.”
Kwan is being treated by Dr. Leisure Yu of Loma Linda, Calif., an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine.
“This is a very painful injury, but with the prescribed rest and treatment I anticipate a full and complete recovery,” Yu said.
Kwan will be replaced at the 2005 Campbell's Classic by 2005 World Junior Championships sixth-place finisher Alissa Czisny. Czisny placed fourth at 2004 Skate America and seventh at the 2005 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She will round out the field of six ladies at the 2005 Campbell's Classic, which includes two-time World silver medalist Sasha Cohen and 2004 World champion Shizuka Arakawa of Japan.
Also added to the roster for the 2005 Campbell's Classic today are 2004 U.S. pairs champions Rena Inoue & John Baldwin, to replace Katie Orscher & Garrett Lucash. Inoue & Baldwin will perform an exhibition at the event, taking place Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center at 7:30 p.m.
2005 World Junior bronze medalist Emily Hughes will replace Kwan at 2005 Skate America. Hughes, who placed sixth at the 2005 U.S. Championships, will enter her first season In the senior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series and is also assigned to the Cup of Russia in St. Petersburg, Russia, Nov. 24-27.
