Team Lambiel is always there and always near him. More than only a coach or a choreographer, an agent or a physical trainer, they are his family. Maybe that's why this union lasts for so long. Things are not ideal, of course, and he left them a few times. The last time was a year ago when he went to train with Zmievskaya and Petrenko in the US. To tell you the truth, it was really hard for me to picture Stephane sitting in K&C with other people. Many things have happened since then. He retired and then he came back. He came back to this team and frankly, I'm glad I don't need to imagine other people with him in the corner of sadness and joy or anywhere else.

Question to Stephane at the Nebelhorn Trophy press conference, after the free program:
Before your retirement you went to United States. You didn't go back there now. Can you tell why?
I'm [feeling] well in Switzerland. I'm happy where I am, and I'm happy with my team, and we're working very well together. So there is no question about moving or about changing anything right now. And what I've learned in United States helps me today, of course.

Peter Grutter: "To have such a pupil is like winning the lottery"
Peter Grutter:“有一个这样的学生,就像中了大奖”

Marc Lindegger: "We are glad he is back"
Marc Lindegger:“他回来,我们都很高兴”

Salome Brunner: "People he loves will always stay"
Salome Brunner:“他热爱的人不会离开”

Born in Bern, Peter Grütter represented Switzerland at international competitions in the 1950's and 60's. He ended his eligible career after participating in the 1964 Olympic Games in Innsbruck. He soon realized that his job in a bank wasn't fulfilling, so he became a figure skating coach the following year. After 10 years in Montana (Valais), he moved to Geneva in 1976 and has since worked with many skaters, teaching them what he learned from Jack Gerschwiler. He has been to every European Championships since 1981 with at least one of his students.

In 1995, a little boy came up to him and asked him to be his coach. From small national competitions to major international events, Mr. Grütter has traveled around the world with Stéphane and has brought him to the heights we all know. (from the bio on stephanelambiel.ch)

After Stephane's practice for the long program, during Nebelhorn Trophy, Mr.Grutter found ten minutes to talk to me about his famous student and about the others, less famous as yet.

First of all I’m really glad to see you here and it’s very exciting to see all the “team Lambiel” together again. My first question will be: were you really surprised when Stephane said that he wants to come back?
No, no, not surprised. I expected something like this because he did not stop the doping control, and he came to practice all the time. Officially he did it for the shows, but if you practice for shows, you do it differently, so I knew that one day [he’d be back]. He told me last year, when he came to Los Angeles (to 2009 Worlds Championship) to watch and I was there with Samuel, he said 'No, I’m not going to return', but the way he said it was not convincing. So I was not surprised when he called me. He thought I would be when he called. He said: “Do you sit down?” I said: “No, I’m standing, why?” He said: “Will you come with me to Oberstdorf?” I said: “Of course!”

Regarding the question about his training schedule in general, it was written in the press-release that he will train two days in Geneva with you and the rest of the week on his own in Lausanne. Is this going to be the case?
No, he is more in Geneva because we have better facilities than Lausanne. I went to Lausanne with him because our Geneva rink was closed for renovation so we trained every day in Lausanne, and now the rink is open so he will come more often [to Geneva].

But it was not announced that Peter Grutter is going to be Stephane’s main coach or that he will train in Geneva.
The problem is I have a lot of other pupils, I cannot always go. And he does not need my presence every day, my correction; he can correct himself of course. Even when he was little he was very often alone because he did not live in Geneva, he was quite far away so… He’s an intelligent person and knows what to work on, sometimes he needs my presence, and this is it. But this collaboration has never stopped, even when he went to the United States. He always came back, we never had a split. We had one split before Worlds in Moscow for four months. I told him then: “If you need me, come back”. In that period I needed a break too and he was very, very decided himself. So I said: “Try to make it alone, if you cannot do it, I will be back”. But we never had fights. Sometimes we fight in the practice, of course, especially when he was at the age of 18-19, when they are in this change of personality. But now it’s OK.

You’re a very wise man, I think.
It’s maybe age.

I don’t know Stephane personally, but from what I read about him, I had an impression that he has a very complicated personality…
He has a great personality and, you know, this is what makes champions. I think, there is no easy champion - this does not exist. So you have to admit, you have to make it work properly, because if you have fights all the time, you work against the victory. So I tried to listen, and sometimes he tried to listen too, so we had that equation.
We have sort of telepathy together. Sometimes I feel things and he says them out loud. He is like my son. When you are together for such a long time: he was eight when he came to me and now he is twenty four, this is a long period, with ups and downs of course. But it will never be a split, even if he goes to another coach - I would still be his biggest fan. Sometimes you’re a father and your child wants to go, and he will come back. We should never hold someone back when they want to go, because they will come back.

I think this is very special situation you have. Maybe this is why it makes me feel so good to see you all together again, because in a way it’s like a family reunion.
I know that many people like this team because of this. Of course he’s happy with the three of us - me, Salome and Majda - we get along very well. We can discuss things, you know, and it makes him feel good. Because Switzerland is a small country, if you do not have a lot of people behind you, you’re very alone out there. So every skater needs a team that helps, and sends out “waves”.

And your team is good at it. I think he achieved all he’s got thanks to you. Well, thanks to him too, of course…
You know, he brings so much. If you have a pupil like him it’s like if you win in a lottery. This is a dream of every teacher to have somebody like this, one day, who really can do what you try to bring out. I think it’s great to have [such pupil].

What do you think is his state right now? He said that he is at 70% of his best form.
Maybe… There are days which are perfect, there are other days… But we started not a long time ago, because I was very busy in the summer, he was away with the shows then he had to have a break, a vacation, then new skates. It’s only for the last two or three weeks we are working on a regular basis. So if he can build up now, with not too many breaks, then I think we will be ready…

Ready in February?
Oh yes, even in January… I think he has to be ready in January for Europeans. We take it step by step, we cannot overdo it now. It’s not like younger children who have to learn many new things; he has to be able to maintain what he can do; and that’s it.

Some more questions about your other pupils. Samuel Contesti, is he continuing to work with you?
Yes, of course. Samuel was asking me [to train him] in the end of the period of Stephane, and I asked Stephane if he minds if I worked with Samuel. He said: “No, no, it’s OK, fine with me”. I wanted to be sure. I did not want to work against [Stephane]… Samuel has his wife who teaches him, she’s a very good teacher too and they needed some advice. And Samuel is a very good person too, very hard worker, and I helped him, travelling back and forth between the two, and my own [pupils] at home, of course, I cannot drop anybody.

You were going to Italy as well?
It’s not far from Geneva, it’s one hour and forty minutes. Geneva is very close to France and Italy. So he lives right at the border. It’s one hour and twenty minutes by motorway and I go there and sometimes he comes to Geneva. Next week we are flying to Japan with Stephane and Samuel (for Japan Open). They both compete in the same team (“Team Europe”). Then for the first time I will be in the situation when I have two at the boards [of the rink].**
Mr.Grutter's pupils did great in Japan, Stephane and Samuel got 150.52 and 117.49 points respectively and "Team Europe" won Japan Open 2009 competition. Read the full report about this competition on our site.

It will be the trial before the Europeans.
I had this in our country sometimes, having two or three in the same category, but not at this level, so I will find out. I will know more about it. I take it a good count and I’ll try to make it.

Your other pupils, Noemie Silberer…
Noemie Silberer...
Noemie, at the moment is injured, she can’t practice. She has a hip injury. She, for quite some time, has not been practicing, but just coming to the ice. I have Loran Alvarez who has a very difficult year at school, with maturité exams, and this is hard for him. I have a very good little one, very much like Stephane when he was young.

Really? Because my next question was supposed to be whether Swiss skating has a future…
We have many good ones, not me, I have only one little, [who is] really good, but the country has a lot of little hopes. I think in a few years we’ll have good skaters again, especially in girls. At the top level not so much, Sara is a bit alone. But we have to wait; we have a few very good young people in the country, more in the Swiss German part.

And the last question: you were coaching under both systems. What do you think about the new one (COP)?
I like the old system more. The new system has brought interesting things but I think it’s too extreme going into the details. And everything that is extreme for me is not good. I’m afraid the public interest will go away because they don’t understand how it’s made, the mark. I am still happier with the old system: I think judges were trying so hard and I don’t think that so many results were wrong. Our Federation was obliged by Olympic Committee. So many times in revolutions, good things disappear: not everything which is good is new… I would not go back to the old system as it was, but I would try to make this more towards the skaters, better for skaters; because we have a lot of nonsense that we have to do to get a lot of points. But of course new ideas happen, maybe programs at the beginning were more interesting but now they look very, very, many of them are totally similar.

But Stephane got all his best results under the new system.
Was Moscow new? Was it already new? But I feel his best performance was not at Worlds championship in Moscow, it was when he was fourth in Dortmund (Worlds 2004), and I think it was old system. And Washington qualification (Worlds 2003) was a very good program. And there were others and it was not his time.
I would try to find a combination. I am not happy about technical specialists though, not happy about all this… There are changes in every championship: things are different, one season this way, another season this way, and this is one person who is a specialist. The reason you have nine judges for example is because you want to have different opinions, but you have only one opinion of technical specialist. I was happier with an old system.

Thank you and good luck to your team and to Stephane in this coming season.

Marc Lindegger: “We are glad he is back”
Marc Lindegger:“他回来,我们都很高兴”

Marc Lindegger is the specialist for the Art on Ice Production AG and Carré Event AG team when it comes to communications. A journalist himself, he is now responsible for all communications activities including publications, media relations, PR and advertising. We met for the first time during the “Art on Ice” show in Zurich. He is the one I should thank for the amazing experience of being present at the rehearsals and watching how the miracle of the show is created.
Marc Lindegger
We met again in Oberstdorf and he agreed to answer a few of my questions about Stephane’s comeback and his work with him.

The Swiss press likes to say that Stephane has a lot of “spins” not only on the ice, but off-ice too. He had a few very big changes in his life during the last year: his decision to train in US, his retirement, and his comeback. What influence did it have on your work? Was it more work to do?
Well, we have a lot of work anyway. For sure when we have some changes or corrections, it adds to our work, but that’s our job. The team around Stephane is doing what he wants to do because he is an artist, he is a skater, and he is a sportsman. We are here to help him to accomplish his goals. Naturally, we also give him some tips, but at the end he is the one who decides what to do. We are very happy he is back, and as you saw yesterday, it’s good he is back. He is back in a way we hoped and expected. I think he is the new and old Stephane Lambiel. His short program yesterday was just great. You see, he was quite sure about his decision. It took a long time, probably, to decide to come back. He only said, “I will be back,” when he knew for sure he would be healthy enough to do it. He is not coming back to be tenth or twelfth. He is only coming back to really try to be one of the best again; he cannot come back just to joke around and be fifteenth. He had to know about his health first and that his injury was under control. He has it under control now and we hope he can keep it like this. He needs to stay healthy; that’s the most important thing so that he’ll be able to reach Vancouver.

Was it a surprise for you when he announced that he wanted to come back? How many days before the official announcement did you know about it?
To be honest, we knew it just a few days before. We knew he has to take the decision sometime, but we didn’t know the news about what he decided much before anyone else. He just said: “OK, I will do it,” and we had to react after that. We were not prepared for this.

You didn’t expect that he would say this?
Oh, a lot of people expected it. But you can expect something and sometimes the opposite happens. So… we’re just happy he is back. That’s good for us, good for Swiss skating, and good for world skating. I think it’s good for skating in general and to be honest, it’s also very good for “Art on Ice,” for sure.

So, this is your way of working with Stephane: to wait for his decisions? First he decides and then you go with it?
We can’t decide for him. He has to skate; he takes all the responsibility. He has to train. He has to work. We can’t decide for him whether to quit, or to come back. In certain things, we can inform him and we can help him, but the final decision about what he wants to do with his life is his.

I’m asking because there were a lot of rumors about pressure on him to come back. The Swiss Federation and the ISU were pressing…
No, that’s not true at all. There was no pressure neither from ISU, nor from the Swiss Federation; no pressure from our side, not at all. We let him decide. Also, he would not react to pressure. I am sure.

The date when he made his decision depended on the deadline of this competition in Oberstdorf, I suppose…
Not only for Oberstdorf, but he really had to make the final decision then because we were late in arranging the entire itinerary for the year. We knew that Nebelhorn Trophy would be a very important date if he came back. We needed to arrange a lot of things concerning the Olympics too, which has to be prepared very seriously in every detail. The program needed to be prepared and there was a lot of administration work to be done. So it was the latest moment to decide, yes. And he knew that.

Because unfortunately he was too late for Grand Prix assignments…
That’s right. We hope he’ll have a good free program tonight and he’ll assure the spot for Switzerland first. After Nebelhorn, we hope the ISU will give us a Grand Prix event. We still hope he’ll be able to go to one of them. We are in kind of a “stand by.” He’ll be very happy to have one because he has to earn 195 points to qualify him [for Olympics] according to what the Swiss Olympic Committee requires. He’ll do it here and he needs to do it one more time. Swiss Nationals cannot count as it is not an ISU event and we have only the Swiss judges there. He can do it only at Europeans, but that could be too late. He would be very happy to have a Grand Prix and to participate in one more competition, but we have to wait.

But it would be a very stupid situation if they don’t let him, the best Swiss skater, go to the Olympics because of this rule.
I think it’ll be OK. He is improving now. The most important part now is to be healthy and to go step by step.

And the last question. I don’t like all the “what if” questions, but still, what if he is not on the podium in Vancouver? Will it change something for you? For him?
You have to ask him. We are working in the sports area, and in the sports life, everything can happen. You can have a bad day or you can have the greatest day. You cannot go and buy a medal there. You can just go and do your best. There are some other guys who want to do it too and Stephane is aware that there are a lot of good skaters around. Nothing will come easily there, so he will just fight and do his best and then we will see. If some other guys are better, we’ll need to accept this. Life will go on.

I can assure you that even if he doesn’t go to the Olympics at all, he is already one of the best skaters and is in the history of figure skating.
Yes; I think he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone anymore. But he wants to do this. It’s his life and we let him go [with it].

This talk was on Friday morning, before men’s free program. That’s why Marc was talking about still getting an Olympic spot for Switzerland. Friday evening, after a winning performance of the beautiful Tango, I met him again and congratulated him with their victory. “Oh, you shouldn’t congratulate me, I did nothing,” he said. But I don’t agree with him. I think that Stephane’s good performance at Nebelhorn was a result of the hard work of all of his team and this victory was thanks to all of them. Hopefully, there will be many more to come in this important season.

Since I read that article about her on our site, this is how I think of her – Queen of Grace. Or Stéphane's Guardian Angel, the title they gave her on the official site. And Salomé really is the queen, the angel, not just his choreographer, but foremost his very close friend. Since I follow Lambiel's career, I adore and respect this woman. In Zurich during "Art on Ice" I had a chance to tell her. This time, during Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, we had a bit more time, so apart from love confessions (from my side) there were lots of interesting things we discussed: her work in shows versus her work for competitions, the new judging system, skaters she is working with and, of course, Stéphane.

Good morning, Salomé. You can't imagine how glad I am to see you here, to see all "team Stéphane" here today.
Thank you, I am happy to be here.

You were asked once if after so many years of work with Stéphane he still surprises you. And you answered 'yes'. I wonder if he surprised you this summer.
It was a surprise because I did not know when this wish would appear and I did not know how strong [it would be]... I knew quite late [about his decision], he already decided, maybe few days before. I didn't expect it at that particular moment, so I was very surprised. I was thinking about this all year because I didn't feel that the wish to compete was completely gone, but at that moment I didn't expect it. I said 'Ah... what?' (laughs) And I was happy that he could make that decision, because it's difficult to feel this, to be on a border, in between, when on one hand you think 'oh, it would be nice' but on the other hand you have reasons that keep you back. I thought it was good that he could make a final decision, either 'no' or 'yes'.

He just told you 'I'm coming to Oberstdorf to make a short program'? How was it?
It was difficult. The [summer] camp was full. Peter (Grutter) and I had many skaters - there was not really an hour of the day when we could work. Of course, I wanted to find time for Stéphane, there was no question, and I said to Peter, 'You know, if we cannot skate here, I will leave, I will go to some [other] place with him' and then Peter said 'No, you must stay here, you cannot leave'. We asked the ice rink administration whether if would be possible to work at night, and they opened one rink just for Stéphane and me at night time, so we had private music, private ice.

And it was secret, nobody knew...
It was not so much for secrecy, more because we needed privacy. We needed to find out what we wanted - and with many people watching it's not so easy to do.

Do you usually have the opportunity to work in such privacy in Switzerland?
Sometimes in the morning, when it's not holidays and children are at school, but it is never that private as it was here. It was really wonderful, because usually there are other skaters, somebody on the ice, in Zurich or in Lausanne, but here it was really only us on the ice, and the music, and the mirror. It was wonderful.

And it took just few days to make the whole program?
It was very quick, because Stéphane had little time. He had an exhibition tour, and it was only this time that he could work. So he came prepared. He had the music already, he chose it and he had cut it with a friend, so the music was ready, when he came. Very beautiful music, I loved it from the first moment. I like the first part of the music very much, it's not so known; the second part is very well known. I like both parts, they're very different.

So he brought the music and some ideas...
... and also he knew already where he wanted to place elements and then we only needed to find the 'language' we wanted. He could do a lot of improvisation because there was nobody on the ice and he had music all the time. It was really construction, piece by piece, and after we worked through [a few] nights here, in the sports center, it was there, it was done. But he needed to practice it after that and get it into his body, as always.

I've read in one of your interviews that this is the way you work with Stéphane: he's improvising on the ice and you're catching his movements.
Usually a stronger skater is more secure, has more feeling, connection with the music. Then more comes from the skater's side and I just have to pick what we have to put together. And when the skater is younger and not so experienced, then I have also to give ideas. Sometimes I give ideas to Stéphane too. But less, less and less. (smiles)

Do you think he would be a good choreographer himself?
Yes, I think so. I wonder if he has the patience to teach something to somebody... Not yet, I think, maybe later in his life. Now he has to do it himself, he's a performer, he needs this. But I wonder maybe later. He will be a wonderful choreographer if he has this interest to do it.

I'm thinking all the time: 'Okay, two years, three years and he won't be able to skate but maybe we'll see him in his pupils, through his choreography'...
No, not in two or three years, no, no, much later in his life.

Ne Me Quitte Pas, the exhibition program, was it also made by both of you?
Ne Me Quitte Pas,
Yes. It was also teamwork, but he gave the input and always, of course, [it was choreographed] in his direction. It was constructed the same way, yes.

I really love this song, I love Jacques Brel and Francophone music in general, and I was amazed how many details in choreography are connected to the lyrics. Pity that most of people don't understand the lyrics.
It was exactly a "lyrical choreography", yes. It was not even a question [how to do this]. We both had the same idea. There was no other way of interpretation.

I saw the interpretations of this song by Béjart Ballet and by Cirque du Soleil, but I've never seen such a version: it's like he is singing with his body. I was so impressed.
Actually I was converted into Jacques Brel's fan, when we were doing this, because I also feel the way this artist pronounces the words, it is very special, they're not just words. He has a very special, intense way of pronunciation. Because I knew this song for many years, so many people have already used it, also on the ice... But when you really get into the song, it's a fantastic piece of art; I like it so much...

I think, what you did - you, Stéphane and Jacque Brel together - is a real piece of art, and I'm not the only one, believe me. My interest in FS started with Stéphane's Flamenco. Every figure skating fan has "The program", and Flamenco was such a program for me. I wasn't sure whether something better than this could be created. Ne Me Quitte Pas wasn't better because I can't even compare them...
Exactly...

This was an exhibition program and suddenly I understood that I'm not sorry he retired if now he can create such beautiful things.
It was nice, and you are right in this, it was actually nice not to have to think about wrong positions or other things like this [which come from COP], we were very free then, that's true.

I hope that in future you'll both be able to create more amazing things like this. Will you continue to work together? After he retired a year ago, was it obvious that you would continue to work together?
Yes, I thought so, but I also thought he would work with many different people, because he himself is an artist now and he can choose so many different ways. He can work with me, and with many other choreographers. I think it will be like this: not all the time he will work with the same people. But he is that kind of person - all the people who are part of his life, people he loves, will always be [in his life]. It's not 'OK, you're today, and you're tomorrow'. I think the connection between him and people - Peter and him, Majda and him, and all his surroundings - this will always stay and when he works with different people it's not that we are forgotten.

It was very touching for me yesterday to see the reunion of your team. When he decided to leave for the US we were all worried how it was going to turn out. I worried about the choreography because I really wanted you to stay with him. I didn't like what Nina Petrenko created for Johnny Weir for the last years, his programs were very empty and I was afraid I wouldn't like Stéphane's programs made by her.
I don't think Stéphane would allow himself to skate something that he's not completely behind...
Maybe it was not the right combination for him [in the States], when they opposed things, maybe in this part of Europe we're less used to this, we see the things differently. But I know there are no bad feelings between him and the Russian coaches, this is also quite nice to know.

Let's talk about your other work. I saw you during the rehearsal of "Art on Ice" show. Are you usually involved in the shows of "Art on Ice"?
I've worked with "Art on Ice" for about fifteen years, since their first show was made. At the beginning I did only small things. I was just there with all the skaters and made small parts of the choreography, and then more and more. But every year I am there, it's a lovely time of the year for me. I will work on "World's Best" show in December too. Oliver (H渀攀爀) should come here and maybe we will find a moment to discuss the show.

Is the approach different when you create something for competitions than when you work on the show? You're free to do what you want, but you need to work with the invited skaters you know less, to invent choreography for the group numbers.
Yes, the approach is very different. My work goes in the same direction but it is intended for the bigger audience. Everything should have lots of visual effects. There are other rules for the shows than for the competitions. Everything should create a common context.

In group numbers, for the finale, for example, you think of how to unite the single acts the skaters have, right?
Exactly. Also for two years now we've been working together with the dance choreographer (Marwin A. Smith), who also brings dancers to the show. So his style of work with the dancers should be in the context of the show. The big part of the work is in the connection between dancers and skaters, so I have to - and I like to - learn from him, from what he is doing on the stage, and to try to translate it to the ice. So I am more a translator sometimes than a choreographer.

I saw "Art on Ice" this winter for the first time live and I really loved it. I think, on TV you can't see the whole thing. I hope that in years to come this show will go beyond the Swiss borders. Though technically, I think, it can be complicated.
Yes, Zurich's show has a big technical aspect to it. A similar show goes each year to Lausanne too. But this year because of technical complexity we couldn't reproduce the whole show, as it was in Zurich, in Lausanne, so to travel with such a show might be a problem. Many preparations should be made for this, I suppose, I don't know much about this side of the show, but it must be very difficult.

I think this is the best European show now, and maybe it's even better than "Stars on ice". Because of all those things you can't move, and also dancers and live singing adds a lot.
I always liked the "Stars on ice" shows.

You performed yourself in some ice show, right?
Yes, I was skating with Torvill and Dean's show. It was a nice show tour. Later on Christopher and Jayne were working in "Stars on ice" as skaters and then also as choreographers. And I always thought that it was a wonderful show, but for many years I didn't see it, so I don't know how it looks now. I would like to see it again.

I know that they are working on the "Dancing on Ice" show, where professional skaters skate with celebrities. Have you seen it?
Yes, I've seen and it's fantastic. I saw the live show in London, in Wembley, and I went without much expectation. People cannot really skate in this show. But they know how to make this show emotional, and you really want the non-skater to do well, and it was very well done. After this show I thought that maybe figure skating needs more public attention and such kind of show brings more attention to figure skating, even the taxi driver knew about it. And also people like the idea that they can go, learn for three months and they'll be able to skate.

Yeah, but then some skater fails in the competition and everybody says: this celebrity was good after few months and this one a loser...
...not even after a few years of training. Yes, there are always two sides to everything.

As a choreographer what do you think about the new system, the Code of Points? Did this make your work harder?
Yes, it's harder. Now [after a few years], it is a bit easier because we learned how to deal with it, but sometimes we think to ourselves 'Why do we have to do all those things?' and we are nostalgic to the time when we could do whatever the music asked for. We need to compromise a lot because of the rules. We feel that the free program is not free anymore, because you have a little space to create something – you have to find a few seconds here and there where you can add some movement.
But it's the system where Stéphane got his first World title, so it cannot be all that bad...

...so we love it. Actually he himself had some criticism about it when we talked with him in winter.
Who are the other skaters you're working with? With Mr.Grutter's pupils?
Yes, with Noemie Silberer. Also with Loran (Alvarez), another boy he has. But not with the Italian boy (Samuel Contesti), his wife is his choreographer, and he has his team who works with him.

You mentioned once that while you work with Stéphane and Sarah you prefer not to work with other skaters on their level, with their rivals.
Yeah, I don't like such a situation. I have this situation in Switzerland, and it's difficult because at the end of the day, everybody wants to do better than the other person.

But after they finish their career will you work more? Do you have non-Swiss skaters at world level that approach you?
Not so many, but yes. It would be nice [to work with others]. There is the Philippine skater who made the choreography with me [this season], he was supposed to come here, but in the end he didn't.

Few words about Sarah, do you know what happened, why she withdrew from Nebelhorn?
She actually trained very well and she was well-prepared. She is a very delicate person, sometimes her body just doesn't allow her [to work hard]. She had so much pain in her foot; she couldn't even put her weight on it. And few weeks ago she was almost without pain and she was very happy.

Is her injury she had during previous season healing?
Yes, she has a good control over it, she found a manual therapist, who is treating her. Now she says that the pain is always there, but even if she does 300 jumps, the pain is the same. And when it's so she is not scared to train. She knows she will feel this kind of pain, but it won't get worse, and everything is under control. She also tried to find the solution for the boots, as she didn't feel comfortable with those she had, so she changed to another type. Some problems she had with "Graf" disappeared, but something new, unfortunately, came up instead. And it's hard to give her advice what to do, it's very complicated. So it was pain that kept her from coming here. Actually I never heard her complaining about this pain, but I didn't see her the last three days in training, probably it became much worse then. I haven't talked to her yet, she only texted me a message. She doesn't need to qualify Switzerland for the Olympics, but she'll need to find some solution for "Japan Open" she was supposed to participate in (in the end Sarah needed to withdraw from that competition too and Elena Glebova was competing for Team Europe instead, but Sarah took part in "Golden Skate Awards" on October 10th, which means that the situation should be better by the time this article is published).

With Sarah, as far as I know, you usually work before the start of the season, while you choreograph the new programs, here in Oberstdorf. But we almost never see you in K&C with her, why? You are always there with Stephane.
Because her coach is her aunt, and they are very close. They've been a team for many years, since she was very small. So it's not that she needs me to accompany her. She doesn't mind me being there, because we like each other, but the only person she really needs is her aunt. I like to be near her and it's interesting for me, but I feel that psychologically for her it's not so important. So that's why I was in K&C with her only when I was there, in the competition with Stéphane.

Is the work of the choreographer finished before the start of the season? Or do you have to correct or adjust things during the season too?
Yes, always, to correct or change things sometimes. With Sarah we put the choreography together, then she needs to learn it with the jumps and then she decides which parts of the choreography she can really keep and which ones have to be adjusted. Working with Sarah is easy because we both live in Zurich, so we can meet every morning if we need to and all year round there is ice in Zurich, we can always find a place.

If it's all year round, why do you have summer camp here, in Oberstdorf?
Peter (Grutter) has come here with his students for thirty years, and I'm following him, because I like to work with him. It's a beautiful center, and this is very good for the students to concentrate just on the skating for a few weeks, without distractions and others things to do when they are at home. And Sarah likes to come here too, because there are many good skaters here, and it's good for her to train with them as in Switzerland there is very few at this high level.

In choreography where are you getting the ideas from? Are you going to lots of different shows, ballet, modern dance?
My interest in general was in this direction. I learned in dance school different types of modern dances, jazz, flamenco. And when I was working in Torvill and Dean's show, we had a ballet teacher, who was training with us every day on the floor. This teacher took me to all the shows in the places where we were touring, in States, in Canada, in England. I saw many big famous performances then. I learned a lot from the work with Torvill and Dean. It's not that you think 'We have to do this choreography' but mostly to learn the possibilities you have. I think it's important to see performances, to learn what other people do, because there are many other people who are working really hard [in the area].

Do you have an opportunity and time to watch and learn during the competitions?
A little bit, but usually my mind is not so open at this time. I should, but... sometimes I watch it after the competition, to see what other skaters do.

So can I ask you to name choreographers in figure skating whose work you like?
Of course, Torvill and Dean, my mentors, I think - they are doing fantastic choreography. There are also less famous choreographers who I respect a lot and I think they are doing fantastic work, like my colleague in Zurich, Sandra Sch爀, Gheorghe Chiper's wife - she made choreography for Gregor Urbas (of Slovenia). Also I like the work of Yu-Na's choreographer, David Willson, but I don't know him personally. I know personally Lea-Ann Miller, I think she is doing beautiful work. When I was skating with her, I never knew she had this talent, I was surprised.

You mentioned "less famous choreographers", I think, it's a pity that most of choreographers are staying behind the stage, we don't see them. This was one of the reasons I wanted to talk to you, because I believe people should know those names and faces. And people should know to whom to be grateful for the beautiful things we see on the ice, who to thank for this. So I'm glad I had this opportunity to thank you personally.
